President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday in Washington DC reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the global fight against the threat of nuclear and other forms of terrorism.
In Nigeria’s country statement to the 4th Nuclear Security Summit being hosted by President Barack Obama, President Buhari pledged Nigeria’s continued support for all multilateral efforts aimed at promoting a common approach and commitment to nuclear security at the highest levels.
A statement by his special adviser on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, quoted the president as saying: “Nigeria accords high priority to all global efforts towards ending the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery, including nuclear weapons.
“Nuclear terrorism is one of the greatest threats to international security and preventing nuclear terrorism and all forms of terrorism around the globe is of concern to all of us.
“To this end, Nigeria has strengthened the legal framework for fighting terrorism through the adoption in 2013 of an amendment to its Terrorism (Prevention) Act, ensuring the implementation of more robust counter-terrorism measures in the country”.
President Buhari told the gathering that to enhance Nuclear Security, Nigeria has reinforced its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United States Department of State’s Partnership for Nuclear Security and the World Institute for Nuclear Security.
His words: “In addition, Nigeria has signed an agreement of cooperation with the United States Department of Energy’s Office of Radiological Security to protect nuclear and other radiological materials from theft or sabotage.
“Nigeria also intends to strengthen its partnerships with relevant international organizations to promote capacity building, particularly in the development of the Nigerian Nuclear Security Support Centre, Physical Security Upgrades and Human Reliability Programmes Implementation”.
Buhari also said that Nigeria has developed a programme to ensure that radioactive sources in the country are better secured to prevent unauthorized access by terrorists and criminals.
The President praised President Obama’s “pace setting initiative and drive”, which, he said, has brought the global fight against the threat of nuclear terrorism to its present level.
We Must Put National Interest First In Police Recruitment- President
Meanwhile, as the process for the recruitment of 10,000 Police Officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force begins, President Muhammadu Buhari, has charged the force to put national interest over and above other considerations in selecting those to be recruited.
Speaking at the grand finale parade of police week 2016, President Buhari said the need for national interest to override other factors has become compelling in order for the reforms initiated by the federal government to yield intended result.
Buhari added that the federal government has initiated actions geared towards the actualisation of a citizens-led policing in Nigeria.
The president, who was represented by the minister of interior, Abdulrahman Dambazzau said efforts were ongoing to strengthen the technical intelligence capacity of the Police.
While charging the public to support the Police in the discharge of their constitutional mandate, the President observed that no nation can boast of adequate security without an efficient policing system.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, has sent a warning signal to criminal elements in the country, saying the wind of change was now blowing through the Nigeria Police.
Arase, who pledged to restore the pride of the Force, said the police will use the Week to “pass a clear message to the criminal community that the wind of change is now blowing through the Police, a cultural reorientation that is premised on adoption of international best policing practices is emerging.
“By today’s grand event the Force leadership is giving practical meaning to its firm determination to restore the lost glory of the Force and re-enact those practices which bind the citizens to their police and elicit fond memories of the Force”, the IGP added.
